IRONSperm: A biological microrobot for targeted therapy

  • Published on

IRONSperm is a microrobot consisting of an organic body doped with magnetizable nanoparticles. This functionalization lead to the development of a biohybrid microrobot that is highly compliant and loading the inside of its organic body enables drug delivery. It is powered and controlled remotely using external magnetic fields and has unparallel promise to physically access small spaces in a versatile and non-invasive manner. We have demonstrated the capability of IRONSperm to be loaded with doxorubicin hydrochloride, a model anti-cancer drug, and move controllably using transverse wave propagation along prescribed trajectories. Dr. Islam S. M. Khalil is the lead author of the paper published in Science Advances
